| Description |
Where
Marsh Creek Lake, located in Chester County, PA, covers 535 acres of water and is located in the Marsh Creek State Park. Together the lake and park comprise over 1700 acres of fields, forests, wetlands, and waterways. To get there, take the PA Turnpike (I-76) west from the Philadelphia area and exit on the Route 100 north. Once in the town of Eagle, signs direct you to the park.
Fish Species
This lake is known for its excellent largemouth bass, crappie, and muskellunge angling, along with other panfish and catfish as well. The primary focus for a family outing should be panfish, including crappies and bluegills. Catfish and largemouth bass are also popular targets.
Best Time
For best results, head out to Marsh Creek Lake from the time ice leaves the lake in early spring through fall. The panfish bite really heats up in spring and some large fish can be taken. Late spring and early summer are a great time to bring the whole family out for a picnic. Largemouth bass action is good around Father?s Day in early summer, and slows as the summer heats up.
Fish Location
Anglers on the shore should check out the East and West Boat ramps, where there is a good amount of room to spread out. The East ramp area is the location of the boat rental, a good idea for anglers looking to explore some of the lakes coves. Shore anglers looking to go farther afield should try around the Little Conestoga Road bridge, and the trail that runs along the lakes western edge from there south.
Top Techniques
Anglers heading out for panfish should cast a bobber with a split shot, single hook and bait such as a nightcrawler or wax worm. Minnows work well for crappies in the spring. Largemouth bass anglers will want to try shiner minnows or soft plastic baits. Larger sucker minnows can be a good bet for anglers targeting the muskies in this lake. Anglers using a bobber should adjust the depth of the bait by moving the bobber up or down the line. Experiment for best depth?often close to bottom but not buried in it. Attempt to use the smallest bobber possible, so the fish feels little resistance when it takes the bait.
Family Amenities
If the fishing is slow, there?s plenty to do in this state park to keep a family busy. A popular swimming area heads the list of summertime options, but plenty of hiking trails also lend themselves to use if you want to ?get away from it all?. In the spring and fall, the park is a popular waterfowl resting point, and can be a great location to watch the birds. |
